Our Origin Story

In the Māori langage of Aotearoa New Zealand, mārama means light and transparency and signifies the moon.

Mission: Mārama is brought to you by the team behind Project:Moonshot, a not-for-profit organisation that was started during the first lockdown in Aotearoa New Zealand in 2020.

Why Mission: Mārama?

Over a five-year period, the Project: Moonshot team delivered a number of initiatives that concluded in early 2025. Their reimagining of the doughnut economic model as Te Takarangi (see animation) explains why we are Mission: Mārama.

Given the scale of transformation needed to face interconnected global challenges, a clear need has emerged for a global platform to connect the dots, avoid duplication and support a new type of collaboration for systemic solutions.

Project:Moonshot Initiatives 2020-2025

Te Takarangi

Worked with Dr. Teina Boasa-Dean to reimagine the doughnut economic model as 'Te Takarangi', redesigned through an indigenous Tūhoe Māori lens.

Moonshot:City

Produced the Moonshot:City podcast and blog series exploring what it means to create a regenerative city.

Moonshot Map

Developed the Moonshot Map: a 2023 snapshot of what businesses and organisations were contributing to a circular and regenerative economy.

The team developed a taxonomy to show what kind of circular approaches organisations were using, to show the maturity of the NZ circular movement. This was scaled with the support of Swiss philanthropic fund Partners for a New Economy.

Circular Economy Research for NZ Government

Researched circular economy barriers and enablers fo rthe food system as part of a consortium for the NZ Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment to support the Government's

Emissions Reduction Plan (ERP).

The research was grounded in a Mātauranga Māori systems approach and in the context of te takarangi and sought to identify and understand underlying structural drivers.

Radical Collaboration Event

Explored the need for 'radical collaboration' to achieve change across systems. The team hosted a Radical Collaboration event with the Embassy of the Netherlands and engineering firm Beca to explore the use of living labs and to hear about best practises in Europe and in the Australia Circular Economy Hub.

Kumu Systems Map

Created a 'kumu' systems map to show how change-agents in New Zealand were working together on sustainability and systems change - and the many parallel and duplicate efforts under way.
